Global University Phone System

Enabling Universities to make free calls worldwide

Getting Started

REEF invites universities all over the world to join the Global University Phone System network. If you are a university interested in connecting to GUPS, to get started and online is quite simple. In order to qualify to participate in this program, your university will need to have the ability to route an entire prefix within an area code (ie. 747-587-XXXX).

Every university campus has a centralized telephone system, called a Private Branch Exchange (PBX). It is this PBX system that houses all of your traditional phone lines . In order to connect this traditional phone system to your online internet network, you will need to have a device that can "talk" to your computer, called a T1 digital PRI card. This is the critical component that translates the data to be transferred from your normal telecom lines to the Linux server configured to the GUPS network.

The installation listed above, the PBX system with the digital card, will need to be connected to a configured Linux PC with its own digital card and Asterisk software, which will enable the data transfer. For qualifying universities, REEF will often assist in providing both the PC and the software. Once you have all of these necessary components, all you will need to do is configure the server, and you are up and running.

As a part of this initiative, all GUPS participants may be supplied with the necessary software and hardware to connect their existing phone system to the Global University Phone System should they qualify. The following Three Options Listed below are ways for you to participate in GUPS depending on your technology needs.

OPTION ONE - Configuration Only Needed

If you have all of the necessary requirements discussed above, and would like to configure your own server, follow these instructions to setup your University software.

OPTION TWO - Software Request

If you currently have your PBX and digital card as well as the Linux PC/server, and need only the Asterisk software to install on your university server, please fill out a Software Request form. A copy of the software with instructions will be sent to you and walk you through the installation process.

OPTION THREE - System Request

If you would like REEF to send you a server pre installed with the Auto Configuration software, please fill out a System Request form and an entire system will be sent to you, should you qualify

If you have any problem setting up your server please try troubleshooting your asterisk installation. If you are still having difficulties please e-mail SIPphone Peering Assistance for assistance in setting up your peering box.
