The Call 9 - 6/28/2004

From Michael Robertson, CEO and founder,
SIPphone.com

Consumers are just beginning to discover SIP. Like the early days of MP3, confusion abounds. Today we have launched two sites that we hope will reduce some of this confusion.

IntroducingSIPhardware.com andSIPsoftware.com.

Both consumer oriented sites were designed to provide easy access information on available SIP phones, adapters and softphones. We are just getting started, but with your help we believe both these sites will become invaluable tools for consumers.

Here are our goals:

  • Focus on consumers, not the enterprise. There are plenty of places for corporations to go to find about SIP technology, but not nearly enough for consumers.

  • Plain English. SIP like so many new technologies is an overwhelming mess of acronyms and terminology only a VoIP engineer can understand. On our sites, we will try our best to speak in plain English and to decipher the important techie elements and acronyms.

  • Under $200. Particularly for SIPhardware.com, we will focus on products under $200. We consider the consumer market as the under $200 space.

  • Shipping, not rumored. The industry is abuzz with rumored, even announced, but not-shipping hardware and softphones. We do not want to stoke this fire of missed ship dates or vaporware, so we will only feature SIP technology that you can buy, use or download today.

  • Customer feedback encouraged. We will rely heavily on your insights, comments and ideas for the sites. Please post in the forum early and often with hardware, vendors, developers, stores, and your experiences. We are even looking for a few real enthusiasts to help us keep the content up to date. Are you interested?

  • SIP Standard. There are many softphones, gateways and even hardware that deviate from the SIP standards, for whatever reason. We think these have a limited future, and believe that standards-based hardware and softphones are best for the consumer and the industry in the long run, so that is where we will focus.

  • Lowest Price. We will always try to find the lowest, no-strings attached, prices.

  • Service agnostic. These hardware and softphones need not work with SIPphone to be featured on the site (though they're crazy not to ;). We know each individual has his or her reasons for making their selection, which works for us. The success of SIP in general is in all our best interests.

We hope you like the sites and we encourage you to give us your feedback and ideas on both SIPhardware.com and SI
